Delhi Malayalee Association (DMA) |
Delhi Malayalee Association (popularly known as DMA) established in 1949, is a premier socio cultural organization of around one million Keralites living in Delhi. With 23 Areas spread all over Delhi, it serves a wide spectrum of the society. It aims at promoting national integration, social welfare, educational advancement, women’s empowerment and fostering a sense of fraternity among the people without any barrier of religion, caste, creed, politics or social status.
The organizational structure of DMA is federal in nature. The Central Executive lays down broad policy Frame Work and Area Committee (Branches) enjoy freedom in implementation and undertaking activities in consonance with the provisions of the constitution. At present, the DMA has 23 Area Committees spread all over Delhi. Eminent persons from all walks of life have been actively involved in shaping and patronizing the activities of DMA, from the beginning.

DMA Sreenivaspuri – Ashram – Okhla Area Committee |
At present Rajeev Joseph is leading DMA Sreenivaspuri Area. He took initiatives to revitalise otherwise dormant Sreenivaspuri Area Committee after 10 years break and subsequently he was elected as the Convener of area Ad-hoc Committee on March 7, 2007 and elected as the area Chairman in July 2007. Again he was re-elected as the area Chairman for second term unanimously in May 2010. Meanwhile, recognising his organisational capabilities, the DMA Central Committee bestowed upon him the crucial responsibility as the Convenor of DMA Malayalam Language Study Centres. It is pertinent to note that within a record time of 2 months, as Convener, he undertook the herculean task of opening 23 Malayalam Language Study Centres initiated by Govt. of Kerala in different parts of Delhi with the support of DMA Area Committees.
Sreenivaspuri and nearby areas in South Delhi accommodates a considerable number of Malayalee population hailing from middle and lower economic strata. So DMA Area Committee in Sreenivaspuri had to counter the problems much different from other DMA Area Committees. The mode of intervention in Sreenivaspuri was that of relief, rehabilitation and humanitarian activities rather than the recreation activities. To its credit, in a number of cases, Delhi Police has entrusted rehabilitation and relief work in good faith to DMA Sreenivaspuri Area Committee and it could give solace to hundreds of hapless Malayalees trapped in Delhi one way or other way in the run to build up a career for a sustainable living.
The problems were diverse in nature and Rajeev Joseph and his team meticulously acted to extend as possible help to the needy, deserved and devastated people from Kerala struggling to save their life, property and a sustainable living. For a long time Malayalees are the worst victims and easy targets of house breaking, road robbery especially the employed people who are away in holydays or wearing gold ornaments. Such incidents are common in Ashram Area. In 2007 DMA Area Committee showed courage to rush towards Ashram police station related to a house break and dacoit. It was surprised to see that the police caught the thieves within a short period of time and brought them before the DMA people.
DMA Sreenivaspuri was able to extend helping hand to some people living under abject poverty, bedridden and neglected by near and dear ones or drawn to such situation by their employers. From 2007 onwards DMA Sreenivaspuri is providing food, medical assistance and rehabilitation facilities in tie up with destitute homes, orphanages and old age homes. In these cases, physical assistance, monetary assistance and legal assistance are provided at the earliest and trying to bring back the people in distress to normalcy.
Accidents are frequent in Delhi roads and especially at nights. Most of the victims are succumb to their wounds due to negligence. In these accidents, a reasonable number of Malayalees are found as victims. DMA Sreenivaspuri has taken many risky steps to save the life of many on the provision of medical help in right time. In the case of death, especially for the poor people it is too difficult to proceed with the funeral and cremation activities. A lot of obstacles are on the way from money to legal tangles. But the Area Chairman Rajeev Joseph’s political and social networking come to rescue to manage such tangled situations. Even sending the dead bodies to Kerala, DMA Sreenivaspuri manages money and other formalities cleared with networking with NGOs and socially committed people.
Blood donation and inspire others to donate blood to save a precious life is a main activity of DMA Sreenivaspuri. On receiving information for the need of Blood, DMA Sreenivsapuri not only personally contacting the donors but also taking the advantage of social networking groups / sites to manage the required amount of blood on time.
Nurses in Delhi are the scape goats for a number of atrocities and harassments from hospital authorities. Due to fear of losing the job, with a meagre salary, silently they are suffering a lot and not at all opening their mouth against these atrocities. But DMA Sreenivaspuri with a considerable presence of nurses extended their help to get back the certificates illegally withheld by the hospital authorities, for pay revision and provision of leave amenities and supported the nurses in their strikes for fair deals in work place.
DMA Srinivaspuri area member Suresh Kumar’s disappearance on the eve of his marriage day in 2008 from Sasthamkotta in Kerala was a much talked about case in Delhi and Kerala, and till date he is traceless. DMA Sreenivaspuri conducted a press conference at Kerala House and profused media campaigns over this matter and put pressure over Govt. of India to involve CBI to enquire this case.
Subhananda Ashram, at Rohini is a worship place for more than 500 families in and around Delhi. But the apathy of the civic authorities in Delhi citing some minor technical reasons was that ashram was deprived of water and electricity for many years. But Rajeev Joseph took this matter up to Chief Minister of Delhi and her intervention helped the Ashram to get the electricity and water connection in order.
Study Tour for Children of Malayalam Language Study Centres in Delhi was firstly organised by DMA Sreenivaspuri and children accompanied by teachers toured historically important places in Delhi and visited dignitaries including Defence Minister of India Mr. A.K Antony and Kerala Ministers Mr. Paloli Muhammedkutty and P.K. Gurudasan at Kerala House.
Influx of Malayalee youths to Delhi as job seekers is tremendously increasing. But in most cases it is difficult for most of the skilled or semi skilled youths to land in a suitable job due to lack of command over either Hindi or English besides the faults with experience. Rajeev Joseph extends all help to such needy people to find a good job and accommodation with his enlarged social and political connectivity.
Other Programs :
Onam Celebration 2007 in Sreenivaspuri was a nostalgic one for the Malayalee community in Sreenivaspuri and nearby areas in South Delhi. Leaders from different walks of life including religious leaders were present on the occasion. Mr. T.K.A Nair, the Principal Secretary to Prime Minister of India was the Chief Guest.

Thankachan and Treasurer Mr. Anil Kumar with other office bearers and members of DMA Sreenivaspuri participated in the Railway Protest March to Faridabad Railway Station on 3rd July 2011.
